Blinds or Curtains?

How to Make the Right Choice for Your Home by Harrisons Curtains and Blinds

We asked Harrisons Curtains and Blinds for some advice around how to choose the best window treatment solution for your home.

When it comes to buying window treatments for your house, curtains are usually the first choice that comes to mind for most home owners but blinds are a great practical alternative for the right situation. So how do you decide which is right choice for you?

Here are a few suggestions we have for helping our customers choose the best window treatments for their homes.

The size of your windows

The first thing you need to assess is the size of your windows. What you would like to achieve, furniture placement and the functionality of the space.

Practical use

Here’s where you need to consider the main point of their use – are the curtains or blinds for warmth? Filtering UV rays? Temperature control, or blocking out light? Purely decorative purposes? This will help to narrow down a number of options, as there are some products which are really good at what they do.

For example, honeycomb blinds are superb insulators, blockout roller blinds help block out light during the day and night and sheers are a great option for day time privacy.

The aesthetic of your home

Depending on the theme of decor running through your home – there may be a particular style or material that fits better with your interior design.

There are many different kinds of curtains and blinds, so it is important to understand the variety, and work out what would best suit your home and the aesthetic you are looking to attain – whether it be clean and neutral lines, chic and elegant, or bold interior design, our Curtains and Blinds experts can help you choose the perfect option for your home.

You should also never underestimate the power of window treatments to help ‘trick the eye’ in terms of how you want a room to appear. There are plenty of ways you can help a room look bigger, or smaller, depending on the window treatments you select.

A mix of both?

It may be that you don’t have to decide between one or the other – as sometimes a mix of the two options can suit a home very well. Many homeowners actually combine both blinds and curtains as it offers a variety of uses depending on the different times of day, the amount of light and privacy required, and also its effect on the temperature of a room (keeping the heat out, or in).
